Read your standup

See what you, your group, or anyone else shipped, has in flight, and is waiting on, already written from their sessions.

  • 4 minutes

Standup is a page that writes your standup for you. It reads the sessions from a stretch of time and tells you what shipped, what’s still moving, and what’s owed, so you don’t need to remember or ask around.

Open Standup from the sidebar. It starts on your group’s standup if you have a default group, and on yours alone if you don’t.

Note

An Owner or Admin chooses who gets Standup in Workspace settings › Features. If it isn’t on for you, the page says so. You see work from the sessions you can see.

What the page shows

  • A summary paragraph at the top, written for the people and the period you’ve picked.
  • Four numbers under it: Shipped, Changed, Answered, and Pull requests. Shipped counts efforts whose latest merged work shipped something people can use. Changed counts the ones that changed how something works. Answered counts sessions that ended in an answer instead of a change. Pull requests counts the pull requests merged in the period, each once.
  • The stories are the heaviest efforts of the period. Choose one to jump to its line below.
  • Day by day lists what was merged, newest day first. For This month it reads Week by week. Each line opens in place to show the headline, a short lede, the pull requests, and the session it came from.
  • Now shows the live sessions and what each is doing. Sessions waiting on a person say why.
  • On the way lists merged pull requests that haven’t reached production yet, whatever the period, and counts the ones that need a person. Show all opens the full list.
  • People lists everyone in the audience. Choose a person to read only their work.
  • Follow-ups due shows what’s owed. See Follow-ups below.

On a phone or a narrower window, Now, On the way, and People follow the days. The follow-ups sit in a Follow-ups bar at the bottom of the screen, above the tab bar on a phone, and open as a sheet.

Pick whose standup to read

The title of the page is the picker. Choose it, or press w, to open the list.

Row Whose work it shows
You Yours.
Your group The people in your default group. It’s offered only when you have one.
Your reports The people who report to you. It’s offered only when Evergreen knows people who report to you.
Groups Any group you can see.
People Anyone you search for by name.
Everyone Whoever shipped in the period.

You can pick any mix of groups and people. Each pick shows as a chip under the title, and the × on it takes it back out. Everyone stands on its own and doesn’t mix with other picks.

Beside the title, Your group and You switch between the two standups people read most. When you’re reading several people, Everyone and Just mine narrow the page to your own work and back.

Once you’ve picked two or more people by hand, the list offers Save these 2 as a group (with your own count), so the same set is one pick next time.

Choose how far back to read

The buttons on the right of the page set the period.

Button The period
Today Today so far.
Yesterday The last working day.
This week This week so far.
Last week The week before.
This month This month so far.

The calendar button, Read since a day, reads everything since a day you pick.

Group the list

Over the days, the Group by control regroups the list without changing anything else on the page. You can group by Day, Status, Project, or Repo. Person appears when you’re reading several people. A group’s header shows how many sessions are live and how many landed, and Only this narrows the list to that group until you clear it. Expand all opens every line, and Collapse all closes them again.

Follow-ups

A follow-up is something a session left for later, such as a check on a deploy or a clean-up. You can say “set a follow-up for…” in any session, or add one from Follow-ups due, which asks you to pick the session it comes from. Evergreen can also suggest follow-ups from your sessions and pull requests. Suggestions sit under Suggested in the list: keep the ones you want and dismiss the rest.

Tick a follow-up’s circle to mark it done. Snooze moves it a week later, and Dismiss drops it. Start a session starts the work right away, with the project, repositories, and people of the session the follow-up came from. A suggestion has Keep, Start a session, and Dismiss. A follow-up due today rings your notification bell that morning, in your workspace’s time zone.

Edit what Standup says about a session

When a session’s pull request is merged, the Overview in its sidebar opens with a Wrap band, which holds the headline and lede Standup uses. The first version is the model’s draft, written from the task, the pull requests, and the summary. The session’s owner or a collaborator can choose Edit wrap, change the Headline or Lede, and choose Keep. After that, the words are theirs.

Copy it for your team standup

Choose Copy for standup at the top of the page. On a phone, it’s the copy icon there. A preview shows the Markdown, written the way Slack reads it, grouped the way the list is. Copy it and paste it where your team shares updates.
