Budgets
Set daily or monthly spending limits for the whole workspace, for everyone, for an audience, or for one person, and choose what happens at the limit.
A budget is a spending limit for a day or a month. Workspace settings › Budgets lists them. Owners and Admins can create and change budgets, and anyone with the Billing delegation can read them.
What counts as spend
Spend is what Evergreen charges you for: the platform fee, inference at cost, agent time, and storage. It also includes model use on your workspace’s own key, counted at list price. Reaching a budget stops sessions but doesn’t change your balance.
Create a budget
-
Choose New budget
Open Workspace settings › Budgets and choose New budget.
-
Say who it applies to
Applies to has four choices:
- Workspace limits everyone’s spend, together.
- Everyone sets a default limit for each person.
- An audience limits the spend of an audience. Under How it counts, choose Together or Each member. Each member replaces the default for them.
- One person raises or lowers the default for them.
-
Set the period and the limit
Period is Daily, which resets at midnight Pacific, or Monthly, which resets on the 1st. Limit is a dollar amount. A Note explains why the limit exists, and people who reach it see the note.
-
Choose what happens at the limit
Under At the limit, pick one of three actions.
| At the limit | What happens |
|---|---|
| Stop sessions | Running and queued sessions stop, and nothing new starts or resumes. This is the default. |
| Stop new sessions only | Nothing new starts or resumes, but a turn that’s already running finishes. |
| Notify only | Nothing stops. Admins and the people the budget covers are told. |
A running session stops on the turn or hour that crosses the limit, not partway through at the exact dollar.
When more than one budget applies
If several budgets cover one person, the one with the least left stops them first, and that is the one they’re shown. A Notify only budget never decides who is stopped, but it still sends its emails whatever other budgets cover the person. The days that budgets use are Pacific days, whatever your workspace’s time zone is.
When a budget stops someone from starting a session, Evergreen tells them which limit they reached, when it resets, and the note you wrote, and suggests asking an Admin to raise it.
Ask for more
A member who reaches a budget can ask for This period only or for the limit to be raised, with an amount and a
note. Only an Owner or Admin can grant a request, and they can grant either kind, or decline with a note. Requests are
made and answered in the terminal, with the Evergreen CLI. A member runs ask, and --kind says what for: use
--kind this_period for more this period only, or --kind raise for a higher limit. An Owner or Admin lists the
requests, then answers one by its id with grant or decline. By default grant gives the kind that was asked for,
and grant --kind grants it as the other kind:
evergreen billing budgets requests ask --kind this_period --amount 50 --note "Finishing the migration"
evergreen billing budgets requests
evergreen billing budgets requests grant <id> --note "Approved for this week"
evergreen billing budgets requests decline <id> --note "Let's talk first"Emails
Evergreen emails people about their budgets: when they’ve used 80 percent, and when they reach it. Admins get their own email when a budget is reached, and again when a member asks for more. The member who asked gets an email when an Owner or Admin answers. Evergreen checks every 15 minutes and sends each email once for each budget, person, period, and limit.
